Romanzo criminale ( en italien dans le texte )

1975, Italy : while the Red Brigades ( a left-wing terrorist group) are shaking the country, a gang of criminals sets out to conquer the underworld of Rome, thanks to the money of a ransom. “Romanzo Criminale” narrates the rise and fall of the gang, focusing on three characters, the Lebanese, Dandy and above all Freddo ( “cold” in Italian ) _ incarnated by a dark-haired, blue-eyed, handsome actor (which spoils nothing ).

The frenzied rhythm of this long film (2h 30) rarely slackens. As could be expected from such a subject, the film is generous in crude violent scenes (on the programme: chopped fingers _ not shown_, or bits of brain scattered on the floor…) but they are amply justified by the general atmosphere of the decades it tries to reconstitute (from the 1970's into the `90's). The aftermath of a bomb attack in a station, for example, is seen through the revolted eyes of Freddo, who is yet shown as a ruthless murderer in many other scenes.

The average non-Italian spectator, who doesn’t know much about the Red Brigades and such major events as the kidnapping of Aldo Moro, can be a bit frustrated by the way in which the historical background is evoked _ only indirectly, through video archives scattered through the film and more or less integrated to the general plot. This is a bit paradoxical for a film which tackles the interesting issue of the collusion between the State and the Mafia, but on the whole it is definitely a film worth seeing.

1975, Italie : Alors que les Brigades Rouges (un groupe terroriste d’extrême gauche) secoue le pays, un gang de malfaiteurs se lance à la conquête de Rome grâce à l’argent apporté par un ranson. Romanzo Criminale raconte l’ascension et la chute du gang, en se concentrant sur trois personnages, le Libanais, Dandy et surtout Freddo ( « le froid » en italien),_ incarné par un beau brun aux yeux bleus ( ce qui ne gâche rien ).

Le rythme nerveux de ce film plutôt long (2h 30) se relâche rarement. Comme on pouvait s’y attendre vu le sujet, le film est généreux en scènes de violence bien crues (au menu : doigts tranchés, dont la vue nous est épargnée, et morceaux de cervelles giclant en l’air) mais tout ça est amplement justifié par l’atmosphère générale des décennies reconstituées (du milieu des années soixante-dix aux années quatre-vingt dix). On voit par exemple l’explosion d'une bombe dans une gare à travers les yeux horrifiés de Freddo, pourtant montré comme un meurtrier sans pitié dans beaucoup d’autres scènes.

Le spectateur moyen qui ne sait pas grand-chose sur les Brigades Rouges et ni sur l’enlèvement d’Aldo Moro (vous aurez compris que je m’inclus dans cette catégorie) est un peu frustré par le traitement de l’arrière-plan historique qui est évoqué de façon toujours indirecte au travers d’images d’archives plus ou moins intégrées dans l’intrigue. C’est un peu paradoxal pour un film qui traite, finalement, de la collusion entre l’Etat et la mafia. Un film à voir cependant !
